COVID-19 cases in New Providence hit 3,000

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The Bahamas recorded another confirmed COVID-19 death and 101 new cases yesterday, with the number of cases in New Providence now exceeding 3,000.

A 75-year-old man of New Providence died from the virus on Tuesday.

There have been 96 confirmed deaths in The Bahamas.

Another 15 deaths remain under investigation.

Of the 101 new infections, there were 97 in New Providence, one in Abaco, and three cases with pending locations.

There have been 4,123 COVID-19 cases in The Bahamas, 1,791 of which remain active.

A total of 2,206 people have recovered, 65 more recoveries since Tuesday.

There were 92 hospitalized cases, down eight from the previous day.

New Providence, which continues to lead in cases, has had 3,022 infections.

There have been 632 cases in Grand Bahama, 145 in Abaco, 54 in Bimini, 15 in the Berry Islands, eight it Cat Island, 30 in Exuma, 19 in Inagua, 22 in Eleuthera, seven in Acklins, seven in Andros, five in Crooked Island, 12 in Long Island, and three in Mayaguana.

Additionally, there were 142 cases with locations pending, up from the 139 on Tuesday.

A total of 20,261 tests have been performed.

This represents 485 more tests, over the 19,776 performed as of Tuesday.

Eyewitness News reported Wednesday that new cases of the virus in The Bahamas trended upward 35 percent last week compared to the week before.

Between September 20 and September 26, there were 523 recorded cases of the virus.

During the period September 13 through September 19, there were 387 new cases, a decrease of eight percent over the 422 cases recorded between September 6 through 12.

Testing for the virus was up marginally between the two periods.

A total of 2,017 tests were performed between September 20 and 26, compared to the 1,926 tests completed between September 13 and 19.

Yesterday, the Cabinet Office announced the closure of the Department of Inland Revenue on Carmichael Road after a staff member tested positive for COVID-19.

The office will be closed until Monday, October 5, for cleaning and sanitization.
