Commodities imports saw three percent decline in Q4 2023

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The value of commodities imported into The Bahamas in the fourth quarter of 2023 totaled just over $1 billion, marking a three percent decrease compared to the same period in the previous year.

According to the quarterly trade statistics report for the fourth quarter of 2023, commodities imported into the country in Q4 of 2023 totaled $1.045 billion, reflecting a three percent decrease compared to the same period the previous year. The major groups of merchandise were ‘Machinery And Transport Equipment,’ amounting to $219 million, ‘Food And Live Animals’ at $189 million, and ‘Miscellaneous Manufactured Articles’ totaling $179 million. The combined value of these categories represented 56 percent of total imports.

Other categories contributing to total imports were ‘Manufactured Goods Classified Chiefly By Materials,’ which accounted for $140 million, ‘Mineral Fuels, Lubricants, And Related Materials’ valued at $134 million, and ‘Chemicals’ at $80 million (these groups together represented 34 percent of total imports).

Regarding total exports for the fourth quarter of 2023, data shows that the value of commodities exported (Domestic and Re-Export) from The Bahamas totaled $143 million, reflecting a slight decrease of eight percent compared to the same period in the previous year. The categories that contributed the largest proportion to exports were ‘Mineral Fuels, Lubricants And Related Materials,’ totaling $50 million, ‘Manufactured Goods Classified Chiefly By Materials’ at $26 million, and ‘Food And Live Animals’ at $24 million, which combined represented 70 percent of total exports.
