Clarke, Armbrister compete in junior tennis tournament

Local players got off to a good start at the 2018 Tobago Junior International Tennis Federation (ITF) Tournament in Trinidad and Tobago.

Sydney Clarke is competing in the girl singles division, while Donte Armbrister is competing in both boys’ singles and doubles competition.

In her opener, Clarke defeated Selene Kentish from Antigua and Barbuda in two sets (6-0, 6-0).

“I’m happy with my second-round match. Now, I just have to hope for the same kind of results in the quarters,” Clarke said.

“Today was good for me because it gave me a chance to work on some shots in order to prep for tomorrow.”

As for Armbrister, he and Romani Mayers, from Barbados, defeated the team of Liam Sheppard (Trinidad and Tobago) and Heimraj Resaul (Guyana) 6-2, 6-3.

“I enjoy playing with my partner,” Armbrister said. “We always have fun together when we compete, and we’re hoping we can keep this up when we get into the quarterfinal round. We hope to win the doubles competition outright. The week before last we made it to the final round of the Coca Cola ITF tournament, but this time, we want to come away with a trophy.”

Mayers added: “We are looking to build on what we did at Coca Cola ITF. We usually have everything planned out before each match and we’ve been rolling good so far.”

The Tobago junior tournament continues tomorrow at the National Racquet Centre. Action was delayed on Tuesday due to an earthquake, and now tournament action will run a bit differently than it appears on the tournament’s website.
