Cataract Program expands to Abaco

NASSAU, BAHAMAS- The Ministry of Health & Wellness is hosting a cataract initiative at the Marsh Harbor Clinic today; health officials expect to provide essential cataract surgeries for anywhere between 100 to 150 patients.

Minister of Health & Wellness Dr Michael Darville said that this is the first time that the surgical theatre is being utilized since it has been constructed.

“We are so excited now that the clinic in Abaco is now reaching its true potential, which is not only primary healthcare services, but to also do secondary and tertiary services. The theatre is actively involved,” he said.

Dr. Darville told Eyewitness News Friday morning that infrastructure repairs within the healthcare sector on Abaco, post Hurricane Dorian, are between 95 to 100 per cent complete.

He noted that a major financial injection was pumped into the March Harbor Clinic to ensure that its cataract initiative would be able to be smoothly facilitated.

He also shared that a technical team will also be assessing the floor of the surgical suite, he said there are plans in the pipeline to replace the flooring which was significantly damaged during the catastrophic storm.
