Carnival Corp and East Grand Bahama local government officials partner for back-to-school aid

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Carnival Corporation teamed up with East Grand Bahama Local Government officials to help ensure East Grand Bahama students are fully prepared to excel in the new school year.

A school supply giveaway was held for all East Grand Bahama students from Freetown to Sweetings Cay during a fun-filled community event on August 10 at High Rock Community Park. Students and their families enjoyed food and drinks, cotton candy, snow cones, a bouncy castle, and other exciting activities.

“The families of East Grand Bahama are Celebration Key’s nearest neighbors,” said Philcher Grant-Adderley, Director of Public and Community Affairs for The Bahamas. “As we approach the opening of our new flagship cruise port destination, Carnival Corporation wanted to reaffirm our commitment to being part of the community.

“What better way than to help ensure the next generation’s bright young students are well-equipped to shine? We also know that these communities were among the hardest hit by Hurricane Dorian in 2019, and so we wanted to do our part to contribute to their return to normal life.” Through the joint venture, all students in East Grand Bahama were provided with back-to-school supplies, including backpacks; lunch bags; crayons, colored pencils, pencils, ballpoint pens, and highlighters; sharpeners; scissors; a ruler; a geometry set; composition books and an assortment of writing paper; among many other items. Students were also provided with vouchers to help with the purchase of uniforms and shoes.

Marcus Cooper, Chief Councilor for East Grand Bahama Local Government said: “We want to thank Carnival Corporation for recognizing the need to help support these children with the basic necessities, allowing them to start the school year on the front foot, ensuring that they are ready to concentrate on learning and growing academically fully. These communities have been through so much in recent years; it is important to do what we can to inspire hope and lend a helping hand.

“We also want to thank the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of the Bahamas District 4/A and the Kiwanis Club of Eight Mile Rock for supporting this program. They prepared and cooked all the food for the giveaway and helped make it a great, inspirational day for the children of East Grand Bahama. The Local Council is grateful to all our caring partners in this effort.”
