Cabinet refutes claims of paying bills for stateless girl

Cabinet Office shot down reports that allege the government would foot the travel and medical bills for a young girl desperately in need of brain surgery.

In a statement Friday, Cabinet said, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is looking into the provision of a certificate of identity for Taranique Thurston in accordance with established policy, however, the buck stops there.

Eyewitness News understands that an internal investigation is underway to determine exactly how the family may have been misled.

Fifteen-year-old Thurston’s story was brought to light two weeks ago, when she and her mother made a public plea for the government’s assistance in helping her attain the proper paperwork for her to travel for a much-needed brain surgery.
