BPL to commence street light upgrade program in October

NASSAU, THE BAHAMAS — Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) will soon replace 30,000 street lights with LED (light emitting diode) luminaires, in order to reduce costs and environmental impact in the long run.

The initiative, dubbed the “Street Light Retrofitting Project”, is being funded by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and the Government of The Bahamas.

According to a press release from the company, the project will focus on upgrading existing high-pressure sodium (HPS) and mercury vapor (MV) lights, which are more than 30% less efficient and more expensive to run than their LED counterparts.

“The project also features a climate risk and vulnerability assessment (CRVA) intended to identify and evaluate the potential effects of climate change on BPL’s assets in New Providence and recommend resilience measures to address the identified risks and vulnerabilities and minimize impacts,” the company said.

Four local contractors were selected “via tender submissions” to remove and replace the old lights, which will be disposed of.

The company says works are scheduled to commence on October 10, 2022.
