NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The Black Innovation Alliance (BIA), in collaboration with the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investments & Aviation, has announced the launch of its “Bahamas Women in Tech Series,” a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering Bahamian women entrepreneurs in the tourism sector through technology education and skill development.
The program, which kicks off with virtual sessions on November 13 and November 20 at 12:00 p.m. ET, is part of a broader effort to foster an innovation ecosystem that merges technology and tourism. This initiative comes one year after BIA formalized its partnership with the Ministry and Innovate242, the innovation arm of the Bahamian government.
The series has set an ambitious target: to impact more than 1,000 women entrepreneurs in hospitality and tourism over the next two years. The tourism sector accounts for approximately 65% of The Bahamas’ GDP, and this initiative aims to close the digital skills gap by equipping participants with tools to enhance their global competitiveness.
Through workshops, training sessions, and a dedicated digital platform, participants will learn critical skills, including artificial intelligence integration, search engine optimization, and e-commerce implementation. This inaugural series also seeks to foster international connections among Black women entrepreneurs, creating a global bridge of innovation and empowerment.
“As The Bahamas continues to achieve record-breaking tourism numbers in 2024—with nearly 5 million visitors in the first five months of the year—we want to ensure that the women entrepreneurs driving this industry have access to the skills and tools needed to thrive in today’s digital landscape,” said Kelly Burton, CEO of the Black Innovation Alliance. “This program is about breaking down the barriers that prevent so many Black women from achieving entrepreneurial success.”
Hon. Ginger Moxey, M.P., Minister for Grand Bahama and Cabinet Co-Chair of Innovate242, highlighted the program’s potential to drive transformative change: “This project embodies innovation, creativity, and empowerment. As the first female Minister for Grand Bahama, I am proud to partner with the Black Innovation Alliance to uplift Bahamian women in tech and entrepreneurship, particularly within the tourism sector. With over $2 billion in investments now driving tangible growth, there is no better time to champion initiatives that empower women and foster transformative community development.”
