NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute (BAMSI) and the National Audubon Society have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enhance their collaboration in bird-guide training and conservation efforts in The Bahamas.
This partnership began in 2021 when the two organizations collaborated on a national bird-guiding certification as part of the Andros Cluster Development, a community-based tourism project facilitated by the Ministry of Tourism, Investments, and Aviation. A key achievement of this project was the creation of a bird and nature guide training certification program, designed to generate sustainable economic opportunities for Androsians and boost the national tourism sector.
The National Audubon Society supported BAMSI with financial and technical resources, including donations of birdwatching equipment and scholarships to facilitate the program, which launched in September 2023.
The new MOU solidifies this partnership, focusing on strengthening and promoting bird-based tourism and educational initiatives in The Bahamas. In terms of conservation, the partnership aims to advance research by enhancing the field skills of bird-nature guides, enabling them to conduct surveys and monitor birds and their habitats effectively.
