Bahamian calls attention to mental health with release of new book ‘Mental Illness Is No Disgrace (M.I.N.D.)’

Book launch and signing set for October 9

“Fear began to set in; I became concerned about how people would see me if they knew that I have bipolar disorder”

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The subject of mental health, a topic infrequently discussed in society, is being brought to new light in a new book by Bahamian LaDonna P Thurston, a mother of three and grandmother of one who is unashamed to announce that she has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Thurston, the daughter of Bishop Albert H Hepburn and the late Karen U Hepburn and wife of Pastor Lester R Thurston, was diagnosed in 2009.

Years later, Thurston said she has recovered but the experience inspired her to write her new book, “Mental Illness Is No Disgrace (M.I.N.D.)”, which is set to be officially released on October 9.

“This book is my testimony of my encounter with mental health challenges,” said Thurston.

“My aim is to be an encouragement to those with mental health issues and to bring an awareness to mental illness; helping persons to see it as a real medical condition.”

Thurston said she started writing the book about three years, but she was hesitant to move forward “for a while”.

“Fear began to set in; I became concerned about how people would see me if they knew that I have bipolar disorder, or if my book would be well received, so I ceased writing,” said the author.

“Then last year, 2020, during the lockdowns due to the coronavirus pandemic, I felt the urge to continue writing my book.

“I believe that God wants me to use my experience to help others. As a result, I began writing again and completed the manuscript in February of this year, 2021, and in March 2021, it was sent to the publisher.”

“Mental Illness Is No Disgrace (M.I.N.D.)” is a non-fiction book of “inspiration, hope and enlightenment” that centers on Thurston’s experience living with mental health issues, as well as on her recovery process.

Although it addresses a serious issue, the book also serves to encourage and give hope to those who might be experiencing similar challenges, according to the author.

Thurston said: “While writing my book, I felt a sense of accomplishment knowing that I was fulfilling God’s purpose for my life.

“The more I wrote, my faith was strengthened and the less fearful I became; the shame and pride faded.

“I believe that writing this book was a part of my healing and recovery process. I realized that this mental disorder would no longer be my secret but it will be exposed and by doing so, I am freeing myself and helping others.”

The book launch and signing for “Mental Illness Is No Disgrace (M.I.N.D.)” will be held on Saturday, October 9, 2021, from 11am to 3pm in the parking lot of United Christian Cathedral, Flamingo Gardens. The book will also be available for purchase on Amazon.
