NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The extensive holiday displays downtown and at Arawak Cay aim to reflect the creativity of Bahamians and the government’s commitment to supporting the country’s orange economy.

The designer of the displays is Linda Stubbs, who has been in the business for decades and decided to elevate the artistry a step further by collaborating with a variety of local artists.

Stubbs hopes it will mark the start of what she anticipates to be an annual event called Christmas at the Cay.

She said: ”We are here to create an event and that event encompasses a variety of Bahamians whether they are the musicians, whether they are playing host that night or these few nights whether they are cooking or baking you know it really includes Bahamians across the spectrum of our country.

“[…] We are hoping that next year as we seek to grow this, because this is something that I shared with the minister of youth, sports and culture, I’ve shared it with the Prime Minister they really loved and embraced the idea.” Stubbs said.

The event that was set to take place over the Christmas weekend was delayed by the rain and rescheduled to the last weekend in December.

It featured 21 Bahamian craftsmen and a number of musicians in the weekend-long celebration tthat offered families the opportunity to go on an outing during the holiday.

“We are hoping that going forward that we obtain more and more support to take this to levels that you cannot even imagine,” Stubbs added.

Beyond providing a holiday venue, Public Relations Consultant for the event Debbie Bartlett said creating an outlet to offer Bahamians in the creative sector a platform to showcase their work and talent is something that should be a continuous factor as the country evolves.

Bartlett said: “The greatest strength of the people of The Bahamas moving forward I believe is collaboration and partnership and when the government commits to invest in the orange economy what people look and believe, they hear with their eyes.

”So when the government who has its role to play in creating that businesses friendly environment so that people would have the trust and confidence in the local business community,” she said.
