Bahamas sees 3.5 percent increase in air stop-over arrivals

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The Bahamas has seen a 3.5 percent growth in stop-over arrivals by air, according to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism Aviation and Investments.

Cooper, while addressing the Airports Conference of the Americas hosted by the Ministry of Tourism, Investments & Aviation noted that the country’s main gateway, LPIA, is “too small.”

“We have seen a significant level of growth in tourist arrivals. In 2023 we have had a record-setting year with air arrivals 10 percent ahead of the prior year, making LPIA one of the busiest airports in the Caribbean region. As a result, we are projecting another $200 million in investment over the next 12 to 18 months,” Cooper noted.

Cooper also noted that The Bahamas is faced with the infrastructural challenge of building and maintaining 30 state-owned airports.

“This is why we have launched the Family Island Renaissance Program to develop PPPs to fully revitalize fourteen (14) airports across the islands for an estimated $260 million. These are two great problems to have, given that they are spurred by the growth we are seeing in tourism and in our overall economy,” Cooper noted.

He continued: “Last year, was our best ever with almost 10 million tourism arrivals to The Bahamas by air and sea and this year we have already seen a 3.5 percent growth in stop-over arrivals by air.

The Airports Conference of the Americas brings to Nassau an estimated 100 airport and aviation executives from across Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States for a four-day forum to discuss important topics affecting international aviation in the region.
