Bahamas sees 16 percent rise in imports, trade surplus widens in Q1 2025

NASSAU, BAHAMAS- The Bahamas National Statistical Institute (BNSI) has reported a significant uptick in foreign trade activity for the first quarter of 2025, with total imports climbing 16 percent year-over-year to $1.2 billion.

Leading the charge on the import side were “Machinery and Transport Equipment,” accounting for $272 million or 23 percent of total imports. This was followed by “Food and Live Animals,” valued at $209 million or 17 percent of imports. Other major contributors included “Manufactured Goods,” “Mineral Fuels,” and “Miscellaneous Manufactured Articles,” which together comprised 42 percent of all imports, totaling $504 million.

Meanwhile, total exports—including both domestic and re-exported goods—more than doubled, rising 101 percent over the same period last year to $191 million.

Top export categories included “Manufactured Goods,” valued at $54 million (28 percent of total exports); “Food and Live Animals” at $36 million (18 percent); and “Machinery and Transport Equipment” at $28 million (15 percent).

The figures highlight growing demand for both foreign and domestically produced goods, as well as increased re-export activity through The Bahamas’ transshipment channels.
