Auto sales surge into 2025, but dealers remain cautious

NASSAU, BAHAMAS- Despite expectations of a slowdown, The Bahamas’ auto market continues to show strong momentum well into 2025, according to Ben Albury, President of the Bahamas Motor Dealers Association (BMDA).

“We’re hoping the trend continues,” Albury told Eyewitness News. “Last year was a good year, so I was expecting some tapering off. But if all goes the way it’s going now, we’ll probably beat last year’s figures—both as a company and as the BMDA.”

He added: “A lot of people bought vehicles. A lot of people upgraded to new vehicles,” he said. “I spoke to a gentleman in the banking industry the other day, and he said it seemed like people went a while without updating their vehicles.”

Albury noted that commercial sales have also remained strong, particularly for delivery and construction-related vehicles.

“We’re seeing strong commercial sales as well—delivering vehicles, construction vehicles, that type of thing,” Albury explained. “So all in all, it’s been pretty steady.”

May 2025, he added, marked a personal sales record.

“Month before last—May—was the best month I’ve had in recent memory,” Albury said. “Last month was good, but May really stood out. I’d have to look back to figure out when I had a better month.”

Still, Albury acknowledged that the market can’t grow indefinitely and said dealers are keeping an eye out for signs of saturation.

“We’re optimistically cautious,” he said. “We know that at some point, we’re going to start seeing signs of saturation in the market.”
