Another fire at BPL’s Blue Hills Power Station

Damaged unit expected to “significantly impact” load shedding

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Bahamas Power & Light (BPL) yesterday confirmed that a fire reportedly damaged a one-megawatt (MW) Agrekko rental generator at the company’s Blue Hills Power Station (BHPS).

“BPL will be advised by Agrekko once the fire investigation at their site is completed with the assistance of the Royal Bahamas Police Fire Department,” the company said in a statement.

It added, “It is to anticipated that the loss of this rental unit will significantly impact the need for load shedding.”

BPL executives previously stated that the company spends $2 million for over 60 MW of rental generation from Agrekko.

Due to a 40-megwatt generation shortfall, the primary cause of persistent load shedding since June, BPL has been forced to add additional rental generation capacity at a cost of$450,000.
