CLOSE THE GAP: $68B financing gap for digital enterprises in the region, says IDB chief

“The talent in Latin America and the Caribbean is second to none and I would say it’s the best in the world”

IDB broadband connectivity report to be released today

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — There exists a $68 billion gap between Latin American and the Caribbean and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries with regards to financing for digital enterprises, according to Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) President Mauricio Claver-Carone.

Claver-Carone, who was addressing a media roundtable yesterday on the bank’s Miami-Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) 2021, noted that closing that gap could create 15 million jobs and boost GDP in the region by nearly eight percent.

He referenced the IDB’s broadband connectivity report, to be released today, which will highlight the digital gap that exists in the region.

“You will see that there is a huge digital gap that exists, a $68 billion gap that exists between Latin American and the Caribbean and OECD countries in regards to financing for digital enterprises,” said Claver-Carone.

“If we were able to close that gap in the region and bring Latin America and the Caribbean to OECD levels, that would create 15 million jobs and boost GDP in the region by almost eight percent.”

The Miami-Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) forum currently underway is the first business forum to strengthen connections between Miami, the private sector and the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. It will promote digital trade and investment opportunities between South Florida and the IDB’s 26 borrowing member countries.

“The talent in Latin America and the Caribbean is second to none and I would say it’s the best in the world,” said Claver-Carone.

“It’s simply about having opportunities, proper legal investment frameworks and regulatory framework as well as opportunities for regular people to set up small and medium enterprises and startups.”
