W&SC employees to get VSEPs

Gibson says 50 to 120 people will be a part of this process

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Scores of employees at the Water & Sewerage Corporation (W&SC) will find themselves on the unemployment line real soon as the government entity is expected to offer a number of voluntary separation packages (VSEPs) in the coming weeks, according to Adrian Gibson, W&SC Chairman.

Gibson made the announcement Wednesday morning during a press conference hosted at W&SC headquarters on Thompson Boulevard.

He confirmed that the layoffs are a part of government’s commitment to streamline government agencies.

The reduction in staff could be seen as soon as Friday, Gibson confirmed.

“Human resources is currently putting together the packages. As you know these things take some time and there needs to be some revisions done,” he explained.

“We have to look at the full employment listing of the corporation, the financial impact, and how the exercise will be carried out.

“We are still working on putting those packages together. I spoke with one of the HR managers and asked her to have something to me this week.”

The reduction in staff numbers is an effort to roll back operational costs at W&SC, affirmed Gibson.

The chairman revealed that up to 120 persons could receive a VSEP by the end of the week.

“I would say anywhere from 50 to 120 people will be a part of this process,” he confirmed.

Meantime, Dwayne Woods, President of the Bahamas Utilities Services and Allied Workers Union (BUSAWU), said he takes exception to the announcement of the dismissal of W&SC employees through the proposed voluntary separation exercise.

Woods told Eyewitness News Online that the executive team at W&SC failed to notify the union of the impending action.
