NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Members of The Bahamas Taxi Cab Union (BTCU) are threatening strike action as early as next week, according to Union President Wesley Ferguson, who plans to meet with union members this morning to chart the way forward.
Speaking to Eyewitness News Online, Ferguson said the myriad of issues the union faces has gone on long enough and as the government looks to redevelop the Nassau Cruise Port, they refuse to be ignored.
“We are going to start hitting the streets and we are not going to stop until we get some attention until we get some things done,” he said. “We have problems at the airport with SUV’s that have taken over the area. The dock is going through a major transition and the union has not been informed.”
Ferguson contends that taxi-cab drivers have been at the forefront of the tourism industry and he maintained that their concerns have fallen on deaf ears.
“For years the authorities have felt that they can just ram anything down our throats and we must just accept it and this time we will not. If we have to strike we will,” Ferguson said.
He said he believes that taxi-cab drivers have also been used as a political football by successive governments and they have gotten the short end of the stick in return.
“Whenever a particular party had a problem with getting into office or power they would look to the taxi union for support and in return we got nothing.”
Taxi Union members plan to meet at the Prince George Wharf this morning and then with the Department of Labour to start the process for strike action.
