Local baseball icon Franklyn Sweeting passed away on Sunday. Sweeting was a former national team pitcher and was instrumental to the development of the sport in The Bahamas.
In 1969, Sweeting was part of the Bahamian team that finished seventh at a National Baseball Congress (NBC) Tournament in Wichita, Kansas, USA. He also helped to form the Nassau Baseball Association.
Members of the Bahamas Baseball Association (BBA) this week released a statement on Sweeting’s passing.
The statement read: “The BBA lost one of its pioneers and national heroes. He was a standout pitcher, a deserving Hall of Famer, a devoted Anglican, a pioneer in the hospitality industry and a dedicated husband and father. Cinderella, thank you for all the special memories, the fun times, the laughter, but most of all, thank you for being the giant you once were. Not only will you be missed, you are indeed irreplaceable. We take comfort and joy in knowing you have taken flight to receive your heavenly rewards and your crown of glory. Rest in peace forever, Frankie ‘Cinderella’ Sweeting.”
