Golden Yolk ramps up egg production as government targets imports

NASSAU, BAHAMAS- The Government’s Golden Yolk Project has produced 200,000 eggs and now has 10,000 laying hens in production, as it moves to increase domestic supply and reduce The Bahamas’ dependence on imported eggs.

Prime Minister Philip Davis, during a visit to the project, said another 8,000 pullets — young female chickens that have not yet begun laying — are being raised to expand future production capacity.

The project forms part of the Government’s wider agricultural strategy aimed at replacing a greater share of imported food with locally produced alternatives, keeping more consumer spending within the Bahamian economy and creating opportunities for farmers and other agricultural businesses.

“Our Government is committed to producing more of what we eat here at home. Two hundred thousand eggs produced, 10,000 laying hens in production and another 8,000 pullets being raised show the capacity we are building. Our focus is to turn that capacity into a consistent supply of Bahamian-produced eggs, reduce our reliance on imports and create more opportunities for our people. Golden Yolk is a key part of our commitment to greater food security,” Davis said.

The additional 8,000 pullets are expected to support increased output as they mature into laying hens, providing the project with greater capacity to supply the domestic market.

The Government said increasing local egg production is intended not only to improve food security but also to reduce the country’s exposure to disruptions in overseas supply chains.

Sustaining higher production levels will require healthy birds, properly managed facilities and reliable processing and distribution systems to move locally produced eggs into Bahamian households and businesses.

The Office of the Prime Minister said increased production and reduced import dependence remain central to the Government’s long-term agricultural strategy.
