Five Chinese nationals detained in Bimini during joint law enforcement operation

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Five Chinese nationals suspected of preparing to be smuggled were detained on Gun Cay during a joint law enforcement operation on Tuesday.

Officers from the Alice Town Police Station carried out the operation in collaboration with the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, the Bahamas Department of Immigration and the United States Department of Homeland Security.

According to preliminary reports, shortly after 10 a.m., officers acting on intelligence departed Alice Town and travelled to Gun Cay.

Upon their arrival, officers searched the area and discovered the five men, who police said were suspected of taking preparatory steps to be smuggled.

Further checks of their immigration documents reportedly revealed that they had overstayed the period for which they were permitted to remain in The Bahamas.

All five men, aged 59, 37, 32, 31 and 23, were arrested and cautioned in connection with the matter.

The investigation remains ongoing.
