NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Bahamas Pharmaceutical Association said it is in agreement with the Pharmacy Council’s recent statement affirming that “internet pharmacy” is illegal in the Bahamas, noting that the online tools used by several member pharmacies do not constitute this practice.
“In every case that the BPA has reviewed, the pharmacy requires the submission of the original prescription in its hard copy for any dispensing of medications to occur. This fully complies with the Pharmacy Act 2009 and all relevant Regulations. While some pharmacies may allow practitioners or patients to upload the original prescription documents, they all still require that hard copy to be presented for any service to be provided,” the Association stated.
It added: “For refills, the participating pharmacy would have already recorded the original prescription as required by law, or in the case of the transfer of services from another pharmacy, would have completed the legal transfer process. This process is also being used by every major public and private hospital in the country.”
The BPA said that it continues to advise its members and the public to ensure compliance with current legislation while encouraging pharmacists to utilize all relevant tools that enhance pharmacy practice efficiently. The Association remains committed to engaging with the Government to make necessary changes to existing legislation to improve pharmacy experiences for the general public.
