NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Long Island MP Adrian Gibson yesterday lambasted the Davis administration over water challenges in his constituency, calling the issue “disgraceful” as he asserted that the administration had abandoned plans for a reverse osmosis plant which was 85 percent complete.
While commenting on the issue in the House of Assembly yesterday, Gibson stated: “Over the past few months, my constituents have voiced concerns over frequent and prolonged disruptions of water supply, experiencing consistently low water pressure or challenges with receiving timely water deliveries, especially when you consider the condition of the old water truck left on the island. During the previous administration, we undertook significant efforts to upgrade Long Island’s water network.”
Among those works was a new 250,000-gallon storage tank and a 265,000-gallon per day reverse osmosis plant installed in Deadman’s Cay according to Gibson. Gibson argued that the plant remains offline to date and is overgrown with bushes, with the water tank sitting empty since 2021.
He said the Davis administration left the RO plant shuttered and padlocked and made no use of the water storage tank.
“When we hear of the challenges being faced in Long Island, we are quite surprised. It is deeply disappointing that efforts to upgrade our infrastructure and carry out timely maintenance have all but disappeared. This neglect has caused considerable concern in Long Island. We are very disappointed to hear today that people on Long Island are rationing water,” said Gibson.
He argued that the plant should have been completed as all the necessary materials were available.
Additionally, he charged that the government scrambled over the weekend to address the situation, barging water to the island. He also noted that the island is now plagued with frequent power outages.
