Ministry of Health & Wellness details COVID rise by the numbers

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Following an advisory on June 28, the Ministry of Health & Wellness released a press statement to provide more insight into the recent increase in COVID-19 infections in the country.

“Spanning from April to June, 2024, the National Communicable Disease Surveillance Unit (NCDSU) has observed increases in the amount of COVID-19 cases in The Bahamas,” the release noted.

“In April 12 PCR-positive cases were reported. This number increased to 42 new cases in May and 46 new cases in June. Additionally, there were other influenza-like viruses identified during this period, prompting the Ministry’s June 28th advisory.

“Hospital admissions have seen a slight decrease. The average number of patients admitted per day was 1.45 in June, down from 1.91 in May.

“As of July 1, 2024, the NCDSU received reports of an average of two persons admitted to hospitals in New Providence, with none requiring ventilation.

The Ministry noted that there were no reports of hospital admissions due to COVID-19 in Grand Bahama.

“The predominant COVID-19 variant currently circulating is KP3. This variant is known to be highly transmissible but generally results in a milder clinical course compared to the Delta variant seen during the pandemic.”

To prevent the spread of influenza-like illnesses, including COVID-19, the Ministry recommends that the public follows good hygiene practices, such as coughing into the crook of your elbow, into the lapel of your clothing or into disposable tissue.

The release concluded: “COVID-19 is expected to remain a part of our lives. However, practicing proper cough etiquette and maintaining good hand hygiene will help to keep the number of cases down.”
