Saunders on John Mackey Award Pre-season watch list

University of Kansas tight end Mavin Saunders was listed as one of more than 60 players on the John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List. The award is handed out to the top collegiate tight end at the end of the season.

Saunders looks to have a breakout campaign for the Jayhawks after transferring from Florida State University (FSU) at the end of last season.

Although Saunders’ move didn’t create a lot of buzz in the collegiate football world, his teammates, over the past few months, have taken note Saunders’ potential. One of those teammates is quarterback Miles Kendrick, who will rely heavily on Saunders to provide a spark for the team this year.

“You can definitely see his physical abilities as far as blocking and stuff,” Kendrick added.

Saunders played in 10 games in his final year with the Seminoles but didn’t record a catch. He made 10 receptions for 182 yards in his redshirt sophomore season of 2016.

Including Saunders, the Big 12 has just four players on the Mackey watch list, where he is joined by Iowa State’s Chase Allen, Texas tight end Andrew Beck and Oklahoma’s Grant Calcaterra.
