Commonwealth Brewery joins ‘labour on the campus’ initiative

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — On January 26, Commonwealth Brewery Ltd (CBL) joined the Department of Labour and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for the newly launched ‘Labour on the Campus’ initiative to introduce high school students to potential career opportunities at the leading Bahamian brewery.

Speaking on the opportunities at CBL, Katherine Beneby (Employee Engagement Manager) noted that “as a company, we believe if we can expose our youth early, we can continue to inspire them to take up roles and seek fulfilling careers at CBL.

“Often, we hear a lot about traditional roles within the medical and legal fields,” she said.

“Still, through this initiative, we hope that we can begin to widen the scope of opportunities available to Bahamians and encourage fields often not spoken about, such as logistics, procurement, and marketing.”

Alongside other companies within the public and private sector, Labour on the Campus targets students in grades  10 through 12, bringing companies directly on school grounds so students can engage directly with seasoned professionals from diverse backgrounds.

“There was a great turnout, and the company seemed to be a crowd favorite,” said Ralpha Moxey, Human Resource Business Partner. “We took the opportunity to find out what the students already knew about our company &  its brands, what their interests are, and their post-graduation plans. From there, we highlighted the extensive career & internship opportunities available at CBL, some of the things we look for when hiring, and what makes a star CBL employee.”

Engaging high school students through this Government initiative allowed CBL to increase its reach amongst youth and build on the company’s visibility as a premier employer. “We hope that through continued partnerships with the Department of Labour and other key stakeholders within the community, Commonwealth Brewery Limited can attract and retain top talent within The Bahamas for generations to come,” said Nadia Bain, Sr Human Resources Business Partner.

In a press release, CBL highlighted that it and its Heineken brand were recently recognized by the 2023 Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index (GEI) for its commitment to ensuring inclusivity and gender equality within the workplace.

“With an over 45% female workforce, CBL maintains an equitable gender balance across senior management. Additionally, opportunities for upskilling through several learning channels and training opportunities locally and abroad contribute to CBL’s culture of courageous leadership and true togetherness,” the release stated.
