NASSAU, BAHAMAS — There could be “some movement” at Coroner’s Court as early as next month, according to Commissioner of Police Clayton Fernander, who acknowledged a number of police-involved killings are awaiting an inquest.
Fernander released the crime statistics for 2022 on Friday.
He revealed that there were 170 complaints made by civilians against police officers, a noticeable decrease from the 234 complaints lodged in 2021.
Fernander noted that 106 cases remain under active investigation, 21 were withdrawn and 28 were unfounded.
With respect to police-involved shootings, there were 16 incidents in 2022 compared to 20 in 2021. Ten of the police-involved shootings last year were fatal and six resulted in injuries to the suspects, he said.
While unable to give specific numbers, Fernander noted that there were several officers awaiting an inquest.
“I was so pleased when madam Coroner reached out and said there will be some movement as earlier as next month,” he said.
“That will bring some relief not only to the victims but the officers themselves who are hanging and let the chips fall where the may. Facts and evidence, thats’ what we deal with.”
