NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Opposition leader Michael Pintard yesterday insisted the Davis-led administration has taken steps to silence the Opposition from voicing any concerns publicly regarding the FTX debacle.
Pintard noted that while there were some issues regarding FTX that could not be discussed in Parliament due to ongoing litigation, there were other matters which he said were certainly “in bounds” for policymakers to publicly discuss.
“It is shameful and despicable that the government is trying to silence the Opposition as if nothing related to FTX we have the right to discuss,” he said at a press conference.
“It is an attempt to muzzle us and they are using this archaic strategy of, if you don’t sing from the same hymn sheet as us you are unpatriotic,” said Pintard.
It was recently revealed that the government has hired Boston-based law firm Brown-Rudnick to handle legal work and engage with the US government and media in connection with the collapse of the FTX cryptocurrency exchange.
To this, Pintard said: “We have advocated very early in this process that the government ought to break its silence because we were suffering significant repetitional damage and they ought to tout the work successive administrations have carried out in trying to protect the reputation of our financial services sector.
“It was absolutely important that we push back against persons trying to expand an individual company collapse to the overall management and regulation of our financial services sector. We recommended that government retain professional help, ideally utilizing Bahamian PR firms that can form strategic alliances with international PR firms that can help us get our message out. We are happy that they have accepted our recommendation. They are late in doing so but we are happy there are doing that.”
Pintard added: “One of the most recent revelations government has not addressed is the former CEO having written the Attorney General and others of the note offering to make whole one category of investors which is contrary to the law.
“We are deeply concerned that the Attorney General did not act swiftly to say that this was an illegal recommendation and only the liquidators could make a recommendation over who would be made whole and on what schedule.”
