BTVI establishes two alumni association chapters

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Kadren K Carey and Tertanya A Miller were recently named presidents of the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute’s (BTVI) New Providence and Grand Bahama Alumni Association chapters respectively.

Their appointments follow a survey launched as part of an initiative conducted during a strategic planning consultancy and a distinguished alumni speaker series that led to the official start of the association.

BTVI Associate Vice President of Fund Development Alicia Thompson expressed that a group of nearly 100 alumni have been working in the background for the past two months in preparation for the launch.

“Our alumni are very busy people and it was challenging to get them engaged at first,” said Thompson.

“Over the course of several weeks, we were able to retain a core group who were determined to get the association up and running.”

She added: “It is always a pleasure to meet BTVI alumni as I move about the community. So many successful persons identify themselves as having attended BTVI, ITC or C R Walker Technical College.

“Regardless of where you live, which program you completed and what the school was called when you attended, BTVI needs you.”

Carey completed her associate of applied science degree in Human Resource Management at BTVI in 2020. She is currently enrolled at the University of Edinburgh and is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and Human Resource Management.

Carey is an advocate for educational reform and its use of technology that allows blended learning and other resources for adult learning.

Meanwhile, Miller was BTVI’s Most Outstanding Student in 2007, when she graduated from the institute’s Office Administration program with a 4.0 grade point average (GPA). Now equipped with a master’s degree in Human Resource Management, she continually encourages both men and women to pursue higher education because it is the key to success.

Both women are ecstatic and primed to step into their roles as the first BTVI Alumni Association presidents.

Joining them in leadership are New Providence BTVI Alumni Association Vice President Georgette Gray and Grand Bahama BTVI Alumni Association Vice Presidents Keith Gibson and Hilary Dean-Roberts.

Numerous progressive ideas were put forward by alumni as to how BTVI can enhance its offerings and make improvements to its programs and premises as part of the recent survey.

BTVI’s alumni speaker series advanced discussions and highlighted the need for deeper and more meaningful interactions.

The first BTVI Alumni Association induction will be held at this year’s commencement exercise set for May.

In the interim, the association is scheduled to pay courtesy calls on BTVI President Robert W Robertson and BTVI Associate Vice President of the Grand Bahama Campus Veronica Collie; hold frequent virtual meetings; attend an alumni church service; conduct community service initiatives and fundraisers; and continue the annual Distinguished Alumni Awards and monthly Alumni Speaker Series.
