18 Haitians, 1 Jamaican charged in court

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A total of 18 Haitian nationals appeared before Magistrate Kara Turnquest-Deveaux in Court number 11 on Wednesday to face charges of illegal landing, according to a statement released Thursday by the Department of Immigration.

Also appearing before the same magistrate on the charge of “overstaying” were  Duken Charles, a Haitian national and Shenae Samantha Hill, a Jamaican national.

All parties pleaded guilty and they were all convicted of the said offences.

In the cases of those persons to whom fines or sentences were levied, they were turned over to Royal Bahamas Police Force to be transported to the Bahamas Department of Corrections as fines were not paid.

The remaining 12 Haitian nationals who pleaded guilty to “illegal landing” were convicted and turned over to the Department of Immigration for further processing.

No fines were levied, however early deportation was ordered.
