1 dead after boating incident, robber shot by police

One man is dead after a boating incident in New Providence late Sunday night.

In an initial report, the captain of the vessel was reported missing but police say he was found in good health on Monday.

According to reports, shortly after 11:00 p.m., five adults, and one child were on board a 20ft Boston Whaler boat,  traveling in waters near Long Cay, where the vessel hit a reef causing five passengers to be ejected into the water.

According to the Royal Bahamas Defense Force (RBDF), marines swam in deep waters to rescue the distraught passengers and helped them on board the Defense Force vessel.

Marines tried to resuscitate a man who later died of his injuries in hospital. The other passengers were transported to the hospital and are listed in stable condition.

Investigations are ongoing.

In other crime,

A man is under heavy guard in hospital after being shot by police Monday afternoon.

According to reports, shortly after 2:00 p.m., a woman had just exited a business establishment on Mt. Rose Avenue, when she was approached by a male armed with a firearm, who robbed her of her bag containing cash and other items, before running away.

As the suspect was running from the scene, police officers on patrol in that area spotted him and gave chase. The male, upon seeing the officers, discharged his firearm in the directions of the officers.

The officers, being in fear for their lives, fired their weapons at the armed suspect, hitting him in his legs. The suspect’s firearm, .40 Pistol, 6 rounds of ammunition and the handbag containing cash were recovered on scene.

Paramedics transported the suspect to hospital where he is listed in stable condition.
