NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Sasha Netwon, 19, walked away with a clean criminal record after acting Chief Justice Vera Watkins quashed a prior ruling and discharged the defendant at an appeal hearing on Wednesday.
Newton, who was 18 and pregnant at the time of her arrest, was remanded to the Department of Correctional Services back in October 2018, after she found a Samsung J7 cell phone in the food court at the Mall-at-Marathon. Instead of returning the phone to its owner, Newton allegedly demanded $500 in return for the phone which had a retail value of $211.16.
Prosecutor Kordell Frazer acknowledged that the accused cooperated with police, pleaded guilty at the first opportunity, and had been serving the maximum sentence for the offense.
Eyewitness News Online spoke to Newton today who expressed her gratitude who also expressed her gratitude after being discharged.
“It feels great. Thanks to Rodney Moncur and Mr. [Wayne] Munroe for helping me so that I can start over and be better and more positive in life,” Newton said.
“I want to find a job first and foremost to take care of my baby and to be a better person in society.”
