Jamal Wilson scored the first medal of the 2018 Commonwealth Games for The Bahamas on Wednesday in the men’s high jump in Gold Coast, Australia.

Wilson cleared a season’s best mark of 2.30-metres (m) to take the silver medal. Brandon Starc, from Australia, won gold at the meet in a personal best 2.32m and Canadian Django Lovett was third with a personal best of 2.30m.

Bahamian Donald Thomas also competed in the final of the men’s high jump. The former Commonwealth Games gold medalist finished fourth overall in 2.27.

Also, on the track yesterday, Shaunae Miller-Uibo qualified for the final of the women’s 200m dash. Miller-Uibo won semifinal two in 22.48 seconds, beating out regional rival Elaine Thompson, from Jamaica, who was second in 22.95 seconds.

Anthonique Strachan also competed in the semifinal round of the women’s 200 but didn’t qualify for the final round. Strachan was fourth overall in semifinal three in 23.64 seconds.

In the men’s event, Teray Smith, finished fourth in semifinal three in 20.71 seconds. Jereem Richards, from Trinidad and Tobago, won the race in 20.41 seconds, followed by Leon Reid, from North Ireland, in 20.61 seconds and Julius Morris, from Montserrat, in 20.69 seconds.

Five athletes will represent The Bahamas on Thursday morning at the games.

Miller-Uibo competes in the final of the women’s 200, Latario Collie competes in the opening round of the men’s triple jump, Jeffrey Gibson runs in the final of the men’s 400m hurdles and Bianca Stuart looks to medal in the final of the women’s long jump. And in wrestling, Sean Wrinkle goes up against Connor Evans, from Australia.
