NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Two UB multi-event athletes turned in top performances at the BAAA Odd Distance Track Meet on Saturday at the Thomas A. Robinson Track and Field Stadium.
Kendrick Thompson won the open men’s long jump with a best jump of 6.61m (21feet-8 1/4 inches) to go along with a fourth-place finish in the open men’s high jump. In high jump he cleared 1.95m (6 feet – 4 ¾ inches).
“I came out here to set a personal record and that’s what I did,” Thompson said of his long jump performance. “My first two jumps weren’t that good but I listened to my coach and put everything together to pull out the win in the third jump.”
National heptathlon record holder Ken Mullings finished second in the open men’s long jump with a best jump of 6.25m (20 feet – 6 inches) and finished third in the high jump clearing 2.0m (6 feet – 6 ¾ inches). He seemed to clear 2.05m (6 feet – 8 ¾ inches) on his last attempt but his hip tapped the bar and it bounced a few times before eventually dropping for a fault. It would have been a personal best for him at the short approach.
“Clearing 2.05 would have been a great start for me for the season,” said Mullings, who has a best clearance in high jump at 2.10m (6 feet – 10 ½ inches).
Mullings is still emboldened by his performance of the weekend. “This shows me that if I continue to train as hard as I did off-season I should be able to progress way better than last year by the time World Championships and the rest of the summer meets come around,” he said.
