NASSAU, BAHAMAS – More than five dozen young Bahamians from the Mount Moriah constituency carried the banner of The Bahamas proudly on Thursday as they participated in the 2018 McDonald’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in Chicago.
Marvin Dames, Member of Parliament for Mount Moriah said the “Transformers Band”, led by Assistant Superintendent Theodore Campbell, rocked the windy city with a taste of Bahamian culture as thousands of Americans and even Bahamians at home celebrated thanksgiving.
He said it is a once in a lifetime opportunity for his young constituents to experience the world while showcasing their musical talents.
“We continue to build this band, not for the purpose of having a band, but also to work with the young people throughout the constituency of Mount Moriah, and building character and exposing them to opportunities far and wide,” Dames said.
“That is what it’s about, it’s about building community and we at Mount Moriah are very serious about that concept and so we’ve been working very closing with the associations of Stapleton Gardens, Millennium Gardens and Yellow Elder to expose our young people to opportunities like this, and this is an opportunity of a lifetime.”
Dames said the band received the invitation to perform in Chicago a little over one year ago.
With their latest feat in Chicago being deemed a successful venture, Dames confirmed that the young group of musicians have already been invited to perform in Europe in 2019.
“Next year there is an invitation to play in Switzerland and we hope by then we would have added to that band so that when we do in fact get to Switzerland we would be raising the banner of Mount Moriah and by extension the flag of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas high.”
