The government will not budge on its decision to have shanty towns demolished as of August 10, the Attorney General (AG) said.
Come what may, AG Senator Carl Bethel said, the government will fix the problem, which he said has been long over due.
Rights Bahamas – the organization representing shanty town residents – has been fighting the government on its stance and has secured the services of attorney Fred Smith, QC, who filed an injunction on behalf of two residents in the unregulated communities, seeking to stay past government’s August 10 eviction deadline.
Senator Bethel, said however, whoever has a problem, “let them sue.”
While the move to completely wipe out these areas may be seen as a bold one, Bethel said, the move has been long awaited and that the government is handling the situation in the most humane way possible, despite notions to the contrary.
