Security guard shot dead during armed robbery

Six murders in 10 days

A security guard at a convenience store on First Street, Coconut Grove was shot and died in hospital following an armed robbery yesterday, according to Chief Superintendent Solomon Cash.

According to authorities, two masked gunmen entered the store around 6 p.m. and held employees at gunpoint while demanding cash.

As the assailants fled the store, one of the men shot the security guard who was entering.

The victim’s identity was not released.

Speaking to Eyewitness News Online, Cash confirmed surveillance footage at the store will assist authorities with their investigation.

He said upon detailed review of that footage, authorities should have a good lead into the shooting.

The incident marked the 85th murder for 2018.

There have been six murders in the last 10 days.

Ashlee Sarah Hilton, 30, and George Deveaux, 33, were shot dead around 10:00 a.m. at Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre last Monday.

The following day, two men were shot to death while sitting inside a vehicle parked in front of a residence in Jubilee Gardens around 11:45 p.m.

Authorities arrested three men in connection with the murder of Hilton and Deveaux.

Two men were arrested in connection with the double murder last Tuesday.

Another man was shot dead shortly after 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday in a yard in Fort Fincastle.

The circumstances surrounding the murder remains unclear.
