Unemployment numbers could decrease in the next statistical reporting period, as scores have reportedly been hired on the spot at government’s recently implemented “Labour on the Blocks” initiative, according to officials.

The initiative was created by the Department of Labour to encourage jobseekers to register in the department’s skills database, while connecting eligible candidates with potential job opportunities.

The next event, which is planned for tomorrow, will target the communities of Golden Gates, Carmichael, Southern Shore, Garden Hills, Tall Pines and Golden Isles.

The department has not released an exact figure on the amount of hires made possible by the initiative however, officials said, the program’s effectiveness is evident in the heavy turn-out at the last three events.

So far, labour officials have taken Labour on the Blocks to Bain & Grants Town as well as Grand Bahama, among other constituencies.

Two of the previous job fairs focused on specific occupations inclusive of construction.

Jobseekers must present two valid government-issued ID’s, inclusive of NIB card to register in the database. Advanced registration is available at www.jobseekers.bahamas.gov.bs.
