Rolle: “Government still devoted to development of Bahamian athletes”
Social Services Minister, Lanisha Rolle.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Lanisha Rolle yesterday reassured that the government’s subvention program for developing elite athletes will continue to be a source of aid for those qualifying for financial grants.

According to Rolle, a total of 100 athletes across 10 sports will receive government subventions this year. She added that the government tried to make the policy as inclusive as possible, however, it would be impossible to support every athlete that is deemed as “elite” by his or her respective federation.

The current endowment for the athlete subvention policy is set at $1.3 million, $100,000 less than last year’s endowment.

As it now stands, subvention is broken down into three levels: Promotional ($16,000 per year), Premium ($24,000 per year), and Elite ($36,000 per year).

“We know that our athletes require constant upkeep, especially our elite athletes that have placed The Bahamas on the world map as a major player,” Rolle said. “A total of $1.3 million dollars has been approved for 100 athletes. This subvention policy has proven to be a vital source for our athletes, and we will continue to back our athletes as they continue to represent us. Some of the athletes that enjoy this include Sherman “Tank” Williams, Steven Gardiner and Shaunae Miller-Uibo, just to name a few.

“As for our college athletes, there are a number of them that enjoy a form of subvention as well, which will also continue. The college athletes will continue to be supported by us covering their dorms and books.”

Rolle said that the government will continue to look for other ways that it can assist its elite and developing athletes in the near future.
