Remediation works on oil dumped in GB ongoing

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Remediation work to clean-up a large quantity of oil dumped on the side of the road in Grand Bahama is ongoing, according to officials.

The remediation work is being performed by DEVCO and its maintenance company Lucaya Service Company Limited.

The oil, which saturated the soil in the surrounding area, had to be excavated with a heavy-duty tractor.

It remains unclear how much oil was dumped.

A police investigation has been launched into the matter to determine the source of the oil.

In the House of Assembly on Wednesday, East Grand Bahama MP Peter Turnquest called the amount of oil dumped was “unconscionable” as he lamented the “egregious act”.

“The amount of oil that they deposited is just unimaginable that somebody would do that,” he said in Parliament.

“It’s just unforgivable and we will ensure that the law is taken into account with respect to that.”
