NASSAU, BAHAMAS- The government has directed the Bahamas Mortgage Corporation (BMC) to look into providing relief for clients who were impacted during the passage of Hurricane Dorian, according to Housing minister Romauld Ferreira.
Ferreira told Parliament a 15-member team from the Department of Housing was dispatched to Abaco following to storm to do initial assessments in the communities of Spring City and Central Pines.
He spoke during his contribution to debate on amendments to the Disaster Preparedness and Response Act yesterday.
“The results of which determined that 92 percent of the 200 homes in Spring City, Abaco were impacted by Hurricane Dorian and approximately 50 percent of the 252 homes were also impacted in Central Pines,” Ferreira said. “I took the opportunity thereafter to instruct the Bahamas Mortgage Corporation to look into the possibility of providing relief for its clients because we are painfully aware that there are persons who have had to redirect funds to other priorities at this time.
He added: “We are looking to provide them assistance in a humane and compassionate way, and I hope to report on this honorable house on the results of that very shortly.”
The Category 5 storm, packing maximum sustained winds at 185 mph and gusts over 220 mph, devastated Grand Bahama and leveled parts on Abaco, leaving thousands displaced and hundreds still missing.
