Questions mount over Prince George Dock privatization

Former Transport Minister Glenys Hanna Martin called on the government to be accountable in the process Friday.

“We have to ensure that there is transparency,” said Hanna Martin.

“We’ll be watching we’ll be agitating and we will fight to ensure that people are not sidelined by any decision of this government at Prince George Dock.”

Back in August Tourism Minister Dionisio D’Aguilar announced that the move to privatize Prince George Dock was to shore up its operations and he expressed that it would be in the best interest of the Bahamian people.

D’Aguilar said that tourists are unimpressed with the port and that the privatization plan is the gateway for more tourist to visit the country.

“We have to do something, we have to improve it and I can ensure the Bahamian people you will have the right to have an ownership in this,” said D’Aguilar.

When questioned on the issue, Minister of Transport and Local Government Renward Wells announced that they are now open to proposals however no formal plan has been revealed by the government on plans for the port.

According to Hanna Martin, however, the government should aim to bring about a Bahamian management team for the port if it is privatized or do all that is necessary to protect the interest of Bahamian people.
