Strong winds and dangerous waves have caused officials to restrict travel across the Glass Window Bridge on the island of Eleuthera until further notice, according to police and the National Emergency Management Agency.

The order came yesterday after raging sea surges as high as 40 feet were witnessed near the bridge. The bridge, which connects the northern and southern points of Eleuthera by a paved road, was closed officially at 3:00 p.m.

North Eleuthera’s Family Island Administrator, Ivan Ferguson, cautioned everyone to take care and avoid the area.

“Residents and curious onlookers are asked to avoid the area all together due to deteriorating conditions,” Ferguson said.

A Spanish Well resident suffered a broken wrist while attempting to cross the bridge, according to Ferguson. The man was taken to the clinic for treatment.

Last Thursday, The Bahamas Department of Meteorology issues a special weather alert advising of a low pressure system headed for the islands through Tuesday.

The statement advised: ‘Motorists on the island of Eleuthera should cease using the Glass Window Bridge once these swells arrive. These large swells are expected to reach their peak amplitudes between Sunday, March 4 and Monday, March 5, 2018’.

According to yesterday’s statement from NEMA, police and the island administrator will view the conditions in the morning and will update the media if conditions change.
