Prison officer on remand for drug charges

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A correctional officer was brought before the magistrate court on Friday morning on drug-related charges.

According to the prosecution, Bernard Hinsey was caught allegedly attempting to smuggle a quantity of suspected marijuana into the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services (BDOCS).

Authorities allege that the incident occurred on April 3, 2019.

According to police reports, shortly after 2p.m. Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) officers along with BDOCS officers conducted a joint search operation.

Hinsey was searched during that operation and reportedly found with six packages of marijuana taped to his body.

Authorities said the suspected drugs weighed one pound and 11 ounces and had an estimated street value of $1,000 dollars.

Hinsey appeared before Chief Magistrate Subusola Swain.

He was charged with one count of possession of dangerous drugs with intent to supply.

The accused, represented by attorney Ramona Farquharson, pleaded guilty.

Hinsey was not granted bail and has been demanded to the BDOCS until he returns to court on June 27 at 10:00 a.m.

The operation carried out at BDOCS is all a part of the correctional facilities aim to crack down on illicit activity on that compound; especially officers who run afoul of the law.
