Minnis says public will be informed
While he has yet to provide any substantive details on the promised Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) probe, Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis on Tuesday renewed his commitment to follow through on that investigation, stressing the public will be informed as soon as it commences.
It has been more than two months since Minnis promised to investigate matters that unfolded among some former members of the BPL board and Minister of Public Works Desmond Bannister.
“I made a commitment that we will investigate the matter and we will investigate the matter,” said Minnis during a tour of the Fusion Superplex complex off John F. Kennedy Drive and Gladstone Road.
“As soon as everything commences and is completed you would know,” the prime minister said. “I would not keep any information from you. I’ve said before, first and foremost, I am a doctor, a doctor tells you the truth, that is our training, okay.
“We are trained to listen, after which we analyze and we come up with a diagnosis. The diagnosis may be bad, but we still must tell you that. Good news or bad news, we must tell you that. I am a doctor, thank you very much.”
When asked about the BPL probe in recent weeks, Minnis has either declined to speak; dismissed the question or maintained that it is forthcoming.
It remains unclear when that probe could begin.
Former BPL Executive Chairperson Darnell Osborne and other BPL board members were replaced by a new board in August.
Bannister claimed the relationships among the old board members had deteriorated, and they were at odds on almost every critical issue at great expense to the power provider. He said this made new leadership necessary.
But Osborne and other former board members have refuted these claims.
Some of the former board members claimed Bannister’s alleged political interference and disrespect relating to the old board were the root cause of the board’s dysfunction.
