Just a little over one year since coming to office, Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis has admitted that the Free National Movement (FNM) has made mistakes.
Speaking at the party’s two-day conclave held this weekend at its Mackey Street headquarters and at the Holy Trinity activity centre, the prime minister said the FNM’s accomplishments were not being heard because of these mistakes, and because the Party needed to improve its communications program, which he assured that they are doing.
The nation’s chief renewed the party’s commitment to keep the Bahamian people informed via town hall meetings throughout the country, and through a better communications program.
“The people called for us, the FNM. They wanted us to rescue, restore, rebuild and revitalize our Bahamas. We won together so we must govern together,” the Prime Minister told conclave attendees.
The FNM’s conclave was held November 2-3 under the theme, “21st. Century Governance: Committed to the Cause”.
The purpose of the weekend conclave was to conduct a critical and frank analysis and assessment of the Party in keeping with its manifesto, party principles and philosophy of governance.
The party also set in motion a long-term strategy including the development of a think-tank, the ongoing development of new parliamentarians and party officers, and an improved communications program.
“This critical assessment of the party included all aspects of the FNM, including: leadership, the conduct of Members of Parliament and the performance of the party in government in discharging the mandate given to it by the Bahamian people following the 2017 General Election,” outlined a statement issued last night by the FNM.
In his address, the prime minister said today’s vision for the party is one of “innovation and transformation.”
“Our mission is to bring about fundamental and far-reaching change to The Bahamas,” he said.
The party leader told the conclave that in just a year-and-a-half, the Government is already witnessing a new direction for the country and was succeeding on many fronts.
“Crime and the fear of crime is down,” the prime minister claimed. “Our economy is growing stronger; public finances are being restored, and there is accountability and transparency with the people’s money.
“The deficit is down; tourism is thriving; major investment projects are on the horizon; we are on the path to rescue Grand Bahama after decades of despair; we have stopped the massive corruption that was draining the Public Treasury.”
Dr. Minnis declared that the FNM is launching ambitious social and economic programmes, including the Over-the-Hill Revitalization Project; land reform, the Citizen Security and Justice Programme, innovations in education, the transformation of the energy sector, and small business development initiatives, including the Small Business Development Centre.
Conclave participants, including all parliamentarians, committed their full support to party unity and to the full implementation of the mandate given by the people of The Bahamas.
Dr. Minnis also thanked conclave participants for the honour given to him to lead the FNM, and he also thanked parliamentarians and party officers for their hard work and dedication to the Bahamian people.
