Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis addressed attendees at a town hall meeting on the banning of plastics in the country at the New Providence Community Centre Monday evening.

The move comes after the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Ministry of Environment and Housing and the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers’ Confederation’s (BCCEC) Energy and Environment Committee.

The MOU is focused on the elimination of single-use plastics and styrofoam containers for food and beverage, by 2020.

Some of the items that will be banned in the next two years include shopping bags, straws, utensils, and styrofoam containers.

The release of balloons into the atmosphere will eventually be made illegal as well, as those products end up in the oceans as pollutants.

Many of these products end up in the landfill that has challenges of its own.

Eyewitness News spoke to Deborah Deal Chairman for the Environmental Committee for the BCCEC on the importance of the ban yesterday.
