Political leaders since time immemorial usually have some response, regardless of how well thought out it is, when pressure is applied. These utterances, most of the time is to pacify the public, lull them to sleep until things return to business as usual. This is because Bahamians could really care less what happens in the country, as long as they could have a Kalik, some conch salad and go to regatta when they come around.
The recent comments made by Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis about the number of work permits are a big joke, to put it mildly. He knows that he is “over a barrel” right now about work permits because it is big business for many. It is so big that there is a bill that relaxes the bureaucracy so that automatic work permits could happen in 14 days if Immigration does not respond in a timely manner.
Is Dr. Minnis referring to the large amounts of Philippine maids who come through an elite agency in Lyford Cay, or is he only referring to Haitians and Jamaicans?
Who is he really talking about?
My mother, God rest her soul, told me, “believe you are smart but don’t believe everyone else dumb”.
I guess he knows he can pull this wool over the eyes of gullible Bahamians because the government have been doing all manner of foolishness since coming to office and the Bahamian people who are mumbling behind the scene, would do nothing to express their opinion publicly.
Dr. Minnis knows that we are just talkers and are scared to death to do anything about it.
If anything happens to the process of work permits, as we know it, would disrupt the flow of money in many quarters. The backlash would be catastrophic.
The movers and shakers of the FNM propaganda machine must be under the bed hiding. Now they must surface to wash off the mud. Expect to get dizzy from the spin.
Charles Dudley Warner said, “People always overdo the matter when they attempt deception.”
