Several of The Bahamas’ premier track and field athletes were presented minted coins from the Central Bank at a special ceremony at the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium.
“The last time we did something like this, we were making a presentation to the golden girls,” said Central Bank deputy governor Derek Rolle.
“These athletes represented the country well on the world stage and we saw these minted coins as a way to celebrate what they accomplished at the Olympics.”
The silver coins were designed for the track athletes who won medals at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, including Shaunae Miller-Uibo (women’s 400-metres) and Steven Gardiner, Stephen Newbold, Michael Mathieu, Chris Brown and Alonzo Russell (Men’s 4×400).
“We appreciate that we are being recognized for what we have been able to achieve for our country,” Shaunae Miller-Uibo said at the ceremony.
