NIB reviewing benefits to thwart fraud
Public Services and National Insurance Minister Brensil Rolle.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Minister for the Public Service with responsibility for National Insurance Brensil Rolle said yesterday NIB is actively scrutinizing its benefits payments to thwart fraud and is pursuing employers who may not be up to date on their payments.

Several persons were arraigned in court this week on fraud charges relative to NIB funds.

Speaking with reporters ahead of a Cabinet meeting yesterday, Rolle said: “The reason the fraud was caught because there’s a fraud unit at NIB that is looking at the benefits payments.

“It is regrettable that this case had to come, but individuals ought to be warned that we are looking extensively and diligently at cheques and payments that we are making to individuals. Those individuals who may have received cheques that they don’t qualify for should return them to NIB.”

Rolle further noted that NIB will also be going after companies who are not up to date on their NIB payments.

He said: “Individuals who have collected monies from their employees and who have not provided money to NIB, we are actively engaged in not only calling out these companies but encouraging them, to some degree forcing them and internally dealing with these matters at the moment.

“If you take an individual’s money and propose to send it to NIB and you don’t then that individual also has an obligation to make it known. What NIB has done and has been doing is making sure that these individuals do not suffer. We are targeting and going after the companies,” said Rolle.
